Compare and Decompose Fractions

Review

Picture
Let's Start with a Review of what a Fraction is.  Go through the activity to review what a fraction is.

Learn two methods to compare fractions

Practice

Have your students create a new Google Doc (if you have computers or ipads for each student) or in their notebook, start a new page.  Go through some of the practice problems below before giving the assessment.  Also, use your mimio to go over them on the board or pull up a Google Drawing and show it on the board.

Dominic, Davion, and Carlos went to the gas station to buy some snacks for the baseball game.  They bought a snickers, bag of cheetos and a liter of cola.  If they share the snickers equally, what fraction do each of them get?  Draw a picture to show the fraction.

When they bought the bag of cheetos there were 80 cheetos.  Davion ate 23 cheetos.  What is the fraction of the number of cheetos left in the bag?

There are 1,000mL in a liter of cola.  If Dominic drank 250 mL, what is the fraction of mL that Dominic drank?

Ashley, Destiny and Dulce were eating pizza.  Destiny at 1/8 of the pizza, Ashley at 2/8 of the pizza and Dulce at 2/8 of the pizza.  How much of the pizza did Destiny and Dulce eat?  Draw a picture to show how much Destiny and Dulce at.

Who ate the least amount of pizza?  Draw a picture to show the amount they ate.

Juan, Ahman, and Tremon were playing basketball.  Juan made 5/8 of his shots.  Ahman made 6/10 of his shots.  Tremon made 7/12 of his shots.  Who made the highest fraction of their shots?

Compare Juan and Ahman's shots.  Draw a picture to show who made a higher fraction of their shots.
